Savage Souths roll over bucked Broncos

South Sydney have started 2015 where they left off in 2014, just rolling over opposition. They defeated the Broncos 36-6 in front of 36,057 fans at Suncorp Stadium.

The reigning premiers were on another level to their opponents tonight, sending an early message to the other fourteen NRL teams watching the game, they won't give up their first title in four decades with a decent fight. The five tries were a result from the platform laid early in the game from the forwards and the running game of Issac Luke.

Luke, who missed the grand final last season, was playing with spiders on him, creating openings all game including a bust which led to Greg Inglis busting up the middle and sending Luke Keary in to complete the rout.

It was an opening twenty minutes which showed it was round one, as both teams were having troubles handling the ball in the humidity in Brisbane. Corey Parker and Adam Reynolds traded penalty goals in the opening stanza making it 2-all, with Reynolds adding two more later in the game including a 50 metre effort right on the full-time buzzer.

Souths built the pressure through dropouts and their defense, tiring out a Broncos defense that were having troubles of their own holding the ball. They broke the deadlock in the 29th minute when Dylan Walker slide through the line, shrugging off a weak attempt from Jack Reed to slide in for the opener.

Reminiscent of most games in the tail-end of 2014, notably the grand final. South Sydney bullied and rag-dolled their opponents into submission in the second half. It took three minutes when an error presented itself, John Sutton the displaced captain, took a short-ball and slammed it down to make it fourteen the difference.

Cue the onslaught, Greg Inglis found himself on the end of a sweeping backline movement which Alex Johnston surged for the corner and flicked it inside to the marauding full-back who dived over and finished off the piece, with his signature goanna celebration. The forwards had tired the Broncos and now the backs were taking advantage.

Brisbane found some solace in the 54th minute, as Matt Gillett who looked promising when on the field, ran onto a short pass, using his leg strength and power to force his way over the line.

The comeback was short-lived, like a channel nine showing of a Gina Reinhart documentary, as their errors compounded. Luke Keary pounced after supporting Inglis in the 57th minute, followed by Joel Reddy on the edge of a swift back-line movement, with passing like it was mid-season to send the winger in for the dominant  36-6 victory.
