Thurston shines as Cowboys go back to back

IT has taken them just over a month, but the North Queensland Cowboys have rediscovered their mojo.

They were too good for Penrith at Pepper Stadium on Monday night with a comprehensive 30-10 victory which followed on from their golden point success over Melbourne last week.

Halfback Johnathan Thurston was integral in the 20-point win, playing a role in all of his side's five tries.

"We got the season off to a slow start but we've turned it around in the last couple of weeks," he said.

The Queensland Origin halfback was full of praise for his forward pack who provided a platform for him to work behind with prop Matt Scott leading the way.

"They're a big side this Penrith pack and we needed to come through the middle third so we can't thank our boys in the middle enough for what they did, it was a great team effort," he said.

The Panthers opened the scoring in the seventh minute through hooker and former Cowboy James Segeyaro who dummied his way over from dummy half.

It appeared to spark the visitors into action as they raced in three tries before half-time to take a handy 16-6 lead to the break.

Second-rower Ethan Lowe extended the lead further just after the resumption with Thurston again providing a perfectly timed pass to send him across untouched.

The Panthers hit back through centre Dean Whare to close the gap to 22-10, before a controversial video referee decision went against Josh Mansour in the 60th minute.

After looking at countless amounts of replays to decide if the winger had lost the ball, video referees Ashley Klein and Henry Perenara ruled he had lost control of the ball attempting to dive over from dummy half.

It appeared to take all the wind out of the Panthers sails as they threatened to come back.

Cowboys halfback Johnathan Thurston added a penalty goal 10 minutes later to extend the lead past two converted tries, before winger Matthew Wright completed his hat-trick in the shadows of full-time.

Thurston said one of the positives to come out of the game was his combination with five-eighth Michael Morgan which would continue to get better.

"I'm still getting used to playing with him, he's still around 90 kilos, but defends well and he's getting better," he said.

Next weekend will see Penrith host the Sea Eagles at home on Saturday, while the Cowboys make it three straight Monday nights when they travel to ANZ Stadium to face the Rabbitohs.
