Magnificent Moylan mutes Manly

Matt Moylan produced a clutch field goal to help Penrith to a 11-10 victory over the Sea Eagles in front of 8,025 at Brookvale Oval.

The Sea Eagles came into tonight, resurgent after back-to-back victories over the Storm and Knights thus were eyeing three straight against an understrength Panthers side, slowly regaining their troops after injury.

A vibrant start from the Sea Eagles, gave Brett Stewart the chance to score within the first minute but the fullback was unable to reign in the ball. Stewart wouldn't make the same mistake with his second attempt, trailing the burst down the middle, making it 152 tries for the Prince of Brookvale.

After a period of ill discipline and errors, Penrith worked their way into the contest and Man of the Match Matt Moylan was central to their attacking moves. He released a lovely cut-out pass in a backline movement would please any halfback, sending evergreen winger David Simmons across to make it 6-4.

It wasn't any surprise that after surpassing Steve Menzies try-scoring record (151), Stewart wasn't finished. Try 153 wasn't far behind, as the fullback bookended a sweeping back-line movement to put the Sea Eagles back out to a six point lead, and looking likely to go on with it further.

The Panthers kept them from further adding to the scoreline, with some gallant defense before the break. Ivan Cleary's men were rewarded for their defensive effort in the 55th minute, Jamie Soward opted to run on last, flicked it to Sika Manu with the forward drawing in three defenders and sending Dallin Watene-Zelezniak in, reducing the deficit to two.

Manly dominated the opening half, but the Watene-Zelezniak try gave Penrith the ascendancy parking themselves in the home side's half for the last twenty minutes. A high tackle in the 74th minute gave Moylan the opportunity to level scores and he duly drove the kick through the sticks for a 10-10 game.

Once again, Moylan was the focal point as the Panthers drove for the field goal to take the lead. The Panthers worked the ball well into Manly territory but the play broke down, still found it's way to who else, Moylan slotted the calm field goal from 40 metres out to snatch an unlikely 11-10 lead.

There was one final effort from the Sea Eagles, after David Simmons knocked down the ball on halfway. They worked it right into the point for Daly Cherry-Evans to send the game into extra time, but the halfback didn't connect well enough with his attempt, skewing it wide and sending those in the west into raptures.
