Broncos charge on as Knights fall

BRISBANE scored the first four tries and the final three on their way to a comprehensive 44-22 win over a luckless Newcastle at Suncorp Stadium.

The home side led 20-0 after 28 minutes and the signs were ominous that a repeat of the Knights club-record 71-6 loss in 2007 was on the cards.

But the visitors rallied and closed to within four points with 20 minutes remaining when Korbin Sims strolled over under the posts after Sam Mataora ran through the heart of the Brisbane defence.

Broncos forward Josh McGuire suffered a possible torn Achilles tendon which created the opening for the Knights prop to charge through.

It would be as close as the Knights would get before the competition leaders kicked clear again to register their 12th win from 15 games.

The loss leaves Newcastle anchored at the foot of the table on for-and-against after South Sydney defeated Manly, but no-one could doubt their effort.

Knights centre Dane Gagai was a constant threat, posing plenty of questions for the Broncos left side defence in a performance which would have caught the eye of Queensland selectors who are trying to find a centre for the Origin series decider in a fortnight.

"The first 20 minutes wasn't the greatest for us and we ended up drawing it back and we showed what we're capable of," he said.

He lamented his side's disappointing defensive performances where they conceded too many soft tries.

"We didn't have any ball, we gave away penalties, we dropped the ball and with a team like (Brisbane) who can break the line it makes it hard. We've got to work on defending our errors, that's where were letting ourselves down," he said.

"It's about doing it for 80 minutes, it was the same as last week where we came out and took the foot off the pedal … we need to keep it up for the full game."

Broncos forward Matt Gillett said his side allowed Newcastle back into the game after tries to Andrew McCullough, Anthony Milford, Lachlan Maranta and Corey Oates had them in control.

"We talked about sticking to our processes; we went away from that a bit and turned over a bit of ball at the back end of the first half," he said.

"Our defence is working for us and we're sticking to it and playing simple footy. The boys have a week off and a bit of time now to rest up.

"Everyone is getting comfortable with the way we're defending. We know we've got a skilful backline and forwards and everything is working well at the moment.

"(The Knights) showed some good talent to get back in the game but it was good to put some points on in the end and get the win at home."

Next week both sides have a weekend off before the Knights tackle the Raiders in the national capital and the Broncos travel to ANZ Stadium to take on the Bulldogs.
