Titans sign Tyrone Roberts

The Aquis Gold Coast Titans have signed halfback Tyrone Roberts for the 2016-17 seasons after the Newcastle Knights agreed to release him from the final year of his existing contract.

The 24-year-old, who was a match-winner for the Knights in their victory over Wests Tigers on Saturday, will add experience in the halves around Titans rookie Kane Elgey who has impressed this season and 20-year-old Junior Kangaroo Ashley Taylor who has also been signed for the next two seasons.

Roberts, who has played 94 NRL games for the Knights and scored 390 points, returns to just north of where his rugby league journey began on the NSW north coast.

Aquis Titans head coach Neil Henry said Roberts provides the Titans with an experienced option in the halves alongside Taylor and Elgey and feels his best years are ahead of him.

"Tyrone is an accomplished playmaker and goalkicker who has played nearly 100 first grade games and has all the skills," said Henry.

"He will complement Ashley and Kane who are young players at the start of their NRL careers and gives us more depth in the squad next year.

"He's from the far north coast which we regard as the Titans' catchment area and he has taken an opportunity to move closer to family and take on a senior role at the club and I'm sure he will develop further at the Titans."

Tyrone becomes the third of the extended Roberts family from the NSW north coast to be part of the Aquis Titans camp next season with exciting centre James Roberts and his cousin, 17-year-old Australian Schoolboys selection in 2015, Tyronne Roberts Davis also on the books for the next two years. Tyrone is their second-cousin.
