Happy Knight for Newcastle in Melbourne

WELL where has that been all season?

That's the question diehard Knights fans will be asking themselves after Newcastle pulled off one of the upsets of the season, holding Melbourne scoreless in the second half on the way to a 20-6 win on Monday night.

In the previous 12 encounters in the Melbourne capital the visitors had only registered the one win - an 18-16 semi-final victory in 2013.

On that occasion halfback Tyrone Roberts controlled the game and came up with a man-of-the-match performance and he was at it again as the Knights registered back-to-back wins to again climb out of the cellar.

Coach Danny Buderus said Roberts kept the Knights in control with his astute kicking game which forced six goal-line dropouts.

"Tyrone Roberts handled the match really, really well. Gold Coast are obviously pretty excited because they're getting a player that ... if he does that every night and every week that's what Tyrone can do so I was really happy for him," he said.

"We had a theme for the week around belief and a bit of a head space to compete down here and it went well. We've got a lot of guys in there now who are believing now which is fantastic."

Knights skipper Kurt Gidley opened the scoring in the fourth minute when he dummied and sliced through before Storm fullback Cameron Munster hit straight back for the hosts several minutes later.

A Roberts penalty goal put the Knights back in front before Tariq Sims burst through a Cooper Cronk tackle on the Storm line to extend the lead to a converted try.

Just before half-time Roberts swooped on an errant Cronk pass and raced 60 metres to score out wide and give the Knights an unlikely 18-6 lead at the break.

Just the two points came in a dour second half where the Knights defence which had been missing for most of the year kept scrambling to hold the Storm at bay.

The six points the Storm scored was only the ninth time in 235 home matches where they have been held to a converted try or less.

As Gidley's career enters its twilight, with just two matches remaining his coach was thrilled his skipper would take a lasting memory with him as they head into next week's clash with the Bulldogs.

"I'm really happy for Kurt because he gets a lasting memory; that's one of the great wins of his career. We're a side that's been battling all year, been fronting up ... it's been tough at times but it looks like we're going to have a bit of fun at the back end of the year," Buderus said.

"We've got our famous Old Boys Day which I'm going to be building up to a pretty passionate Saturday night there in Newcastle and I'm really looking forward to the week and getting some people involved that will hopefully get a big crowd back there and say hooray to Kurt for our last home game."
