Souths trample sorry Sea Eagles

South Sydney have bounced back from the bye with a resounding 20-8 win over Manly in a physical game at ANZ Stadium tonight.

Souths coming off a bye and an embarrassing 34-6 hammering at the hands of Wests Tigers a fortnight ago started well and had Manly under pressure in the opening 15 minutes with some physical running through the middle third of the field. On the back of strong performances by George Burgess and John Sutton in the forward pack they bullied Manly in the opening exchanges. However to Manly's credit they weathered the storm somewhat and were in fact the first team to score. This occurred in the 26th Minute when after some extended pressure saw Manly receive back to back sets, Kieran Foran hit a lovely cross field chip which was spilled by the normally safe Greg Inglis, scooped upon by embattled half Daly Cherry Evans who threw a lovely cut out pass that was collected by Peta Hiku who slid over out wide. The New Zealand international was unable to successfully convert his own try and the score remained 4-0

Souths weren't about to stand for this and less than two minutes later they had leveled the scores through a lovely try to boom winger Aaron Gray. The Mascot junior collected a sublime cut out pass by Greg and strolled his way over the line for his 6th try in just 8 games. Isaac Luke taking over the kicking duties from Adam Reynolds who had succumbed to a head injury and was forced off with the concussion rule, was unable to give Souths the lead and the scores were locked at 4-4. Both sides chanced their arm in the remaining 10 minutes however the only points that were scored were by an Isaac Luke penalty goal two minutes from the break. At half time Souths deservedly led 6-4.

Souths came flying out of the blocks in the second half scoring two tries in the first 8 minutes. The first came when George Burgess burst through some lazy and ordinary defence by the Sea Eagles on his way to a 40 metre bust, Aaron Gray was on the end of it and raced down the right wing and then threw a wonderful pass to Bryson Goodwin on the inside despite being thrown into touch by the onrushing Manly Defence. Goodwin grounded the ball and Souths opened up a 10-4 lead. Minutes later Souths were over again through that man Aaron Gray. John Sutton filling the halves role that Adam Reynold's had vacated put in a lovely, sublime kick that Gray picked up with ease and scooted over in the corner. Luke again missed the kick at goal and the score had now moved out to 14-4.

Manly weren't about to die wondering though. On 56 minutes they used a lovely planned move with a stylish pass by Kieran Foran that left Steve Matai in a gaping hole. Matai didn't need any invitations and slid over in the corner to reduce the deficit to 6 after Peta Hiku missed his 2nd shot of the night. However this would be the closest that the Sea eagles would get. South all but put the game beyond date on 63 minutes when a high kick by Luke Keary was bizarrely not played at by the Sea Eagles back three, instead Alex Johnston leapt high and powered through the tackle and offloaded to a flying Keary who juggled and sprinted to the line to score. The goal by Luke gave them the largest lead of the match and ultimate the full time score.

The final 15 minutes was littered with poor ball control and penalties. Souths held their defensive line and recorded a satisfying 20-8 win.

Manly will be very disappointed with yet another defeat in a match where they were in the hunt until 15 minutes to go. Lack of polish at the end of their sets and miss tackles and poor defensive reads hurt them in this game. The pressure is really on the club now as they have to win 8 of their last 10 games to qualify for the finals. A tough ask indeed. They play Cronulla next week at Brookvale Oval in an Origin-affected match. Plenty of history in that game!

Souths move into the top 4 (although only momentarily). Their win was again based on defence which will be pleasing to coach Michael Maguire. The win also came without Adam Reynolds for a large portion of the game. They are finding some form at the right time of the season and are marching up the ladder. John Sutton's form will gives the Souths faithful plenty to get excited about. His running and kicking game was top notch tonight. Souths battle Penrith next week at Pepper Stadium without their sole origin player Greg Inglis. They will be continuing to search for consistency and form in the back end of the season and push for a top 4 berth.
