Rabbitohs dominate Roosters to book Grand Final spot

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are into their first Grand Final since 1971 after a bruising victory over the defending Premiers the Sydney Roosters in front of 52,592 fans at ANZ Stadium tonight.

Long suffering South Sydney fans can dare to dream now after their side won the preliminary final tonight after losing in the past two seasons at the same stage. In one of the most dominant forward displays of the year the Rabbitohs had too much grunt for the Roosters who tried to match the Rabbitohs forwards but came up well short.

The Roosters started the better and it was in form halfback Mitchell Pearce who opened up the Rabbitohs defence with a scything run to beat the first line of defence then stepping easily around the 200 gamer, Greg Inglis to score in the 5th minute. Souths fans were quietened further a couple of minutes later when, on the end of a 70 metre set the Roosters bombed Inglis who was comprehensively outjumped by the retiring Roosters custodian Anthony Minichiello. A lead of 12 nil early on soon changed however as the Roosters gave away cheap territory with consecutive penalties. The Rabbitohs worked their big men back into the game and from then on the second half was all Rabbitohs as the Roosters big men consistently found themselves going backwards in defence and, more worryingly, attack. South Sydney capitalised on their forward dominance through tries to their old and young wingers. Lote Tuquiri - the old - scored in the 21st minute and Alex Johnston - the young - touched down from a neat short side play in the 30th minute.

Though the game was level at 12 a piece at the break it was the Rabbitohs who had all the momentum, and they capped off another dominant period with the rampaging Ben Te'o holding off four defenders to score in the 44th minute. Eight minutes later Greg Inglis had the chance to show the fans his ‘Goanna' try celebration after running onto an inside ball from his skipper John Sutton. With Adam Reynolds not looking like missing the conversions it looked to be a long way back for the 2013 Premiers. So it proved to be in the 65th minute when Inglis latched onto a cross field kick and used the posts to shield himself from Minichiello to score the match winner. The Red and Green faithful began singing in earnest from that point and despite two late consolation tries to Aidan Guerra and Minichiello making the score line look flattering it was apparent there was only going to be one winner from early on in the second half.

Isaac Luke was particularly good tonight but he will await the Match Review Committee decision nervously after being placed on report for a lifting tackle in the second half.

The Rabbitohs can now sit back and wait to see who they will face next Sunday evening in the big dance, with the Panthers and Bulldogs to do battle Saturday night to book the remaining spot.

LeagueUnlimited.com Live Commentary

Good evening to you all and a very, very big welcome to ANZ Stadium in Sydney for the big one tonight. By big, I really mean GARGANTUAN. This is it folks. It's the game the NRL wants, it's the game Channel 9 wants, it's the game we all want to see. The South Sydney Rabbitohs take on the defending premiers, Sydney Roosters for a spot in the big dance, the Gee Eff, the Granny, the Grand Final.
There are matchups all over the park tonight, though one in particular stands out... Yes, you know who I'm talking about.. The two Rugby bound Superstars, Sonny Bill Williams for the Roosters and Sam Burgess for the Rabbitohs.
For the Rabbitohs it will be their third straight Prelim and they'll be hoping for third time lucky for sure, having had the week off after doing a job on Manly in week 1. The Roosters will be hoping to build on their dramatic 1 point win over the hapless Cowboys last week and go into their third Grand Final in 5 years.
At the ground we've got a temperature of 16 degrees with the slight possibility of showers later on tonight. My name is Luke Wenitong and I'll be with you throughout. I'll be back just before kick off with final team lists, please do join me then.

TEAM LISTS: South Sydney are 1-17 per program, with Ben Te'o returning from suspension to take his place on the bench at the expense of Luke Burgess who misses out tonight. For the Roosters Dylan Napa returns from suspension and will run on at prop with Sam Moa going to the bench. That seems to be it folks, all that's left is to grab your beverage of choice, put the cat outside, kids inside, hope that your partner doesn't find the remote you've stashed, and...enjoy. By the way, remember people...It's just a game.

Kickoff just a few minutes away. Awesome atmosphere at ANZ tonight, a real buzz in the air.
